What to Wear to Your Engagement Session: A Comprehensive Guide

We love engagement sessions! These sessions give us the chance to meet and work with our brides and grooms before their big days. They also give our couples the chance to get to know us and how we work behind our cameras.

We always say there is no take two for wedding days. Once the day is over, there is no redoing your photos, your makeup, everything. Engagement sessions give that practice trial to your big day.

From our perspective, you get to feel comfortable being on the other side of our lenses. We always suggest that our brides also book their makeup trials on the day of the engagement sessions. Makeup can look a certain way in photos and you’d love that captured beforehand so you know what you’re getting on your big day.

We have heard how planning for engagement sessions can bring so much worry to our couples. These photos will go on save the dates, wedding invites, wedding website and so many more.

We are here to help you navigating this concern now! This is a comprehensive guide from our experience to what to wear to you engagement session!

1. Coordinate your colors.

Instead of going matchy-matchy which is an old photo trend, choose colors that complement each other. He can wear light blue and she can wear light pink. Or he can wear light pink and she can wear white or cream colour.

2. Coordinate your style.

Your photos will be used everywhere from your save the date cards to your guest books, selecting similar level of formality is also important. If you’re going to do formal, he can wear tux and she can wear a long dress. Choosing formal, semi formal or even casual will be key to how your photos turned out as well.

3. Dress according to your locations.

Similar to our point above, dress accordingly to your location will also be key. Choose light and airy clothes to a beach vibe like Matt and Grace.

4. Avoid logos and busy patterns.

Small stripes and big logos can take away viewers’ eyes from what really is the focus on the photos: you. They are distracting and brands can be outdated fairly quickly. There are some photos that you can tell: these are very 1990s and 2005s, we want to avoid that and create timeless photos for our couples.

5. Shoes are also important.

If not the most important. 🙂 They give the final look of your photos. Choose shoes that complement your outfits and you feel comfortable walking in.
If you’re not used to wearing heels and are considering to wear them for your formal look with your dress, fear not! We suggest bringing flip flops or comfortable sneakers to walk between locations.

6. Timeless and comfortable

This is also important, as good as an outfit looks, we want you to be comfortable in them. When you shop or dig your closets for the right outfits for your engagement session, consider your comfort level.
Are you comfortable in this outfit? Your photos will show if you don’t feel and look comfortable. Choose and shop only the ones you feel comfortable in.
Choose timeless outfit is another piece of advice we can give you, you want your engagement photos to look beautiful for years to come.

We hope this guideline can help you planning and coordinating your outfits for your engagement session. Last but not least, have fun doing this! Have a goal in mind (Pinterest can help you with some ideas) and have fun digging your closet or shopping! 🙂
Much Love,
Jenn and Kevin
