Toronto Family Photographer // Getting Ready for Your Newborn Session

Newborn session is an important session for a lot of parents because the first few days of their babies just flew away. They grew so fast within the first year, let alone the first week. We always suggest parents to schedule their newborn session right away. 4 -7 days old is the most ideal. It’s the sleepiest stage for the babies. The following are some steps we recommend to our clients who are looking for our services as a Toronto family photographer capturing the newborn stage. Planning for an outfit for this shoot is not the same as planning for an engagement session or a photoshoot in the park. We are here to help you dressing up for your newborn session with Hello Inspira Photography!

HOW TO PREPARE THE ROOM

We photograph a lot in areas with natural/window light. Please make sure these areas in your bedroom and the nursery are clean. The easiest way for a temporary solution is to move out the clutters to the hallway/washrooms as we won’t be shooting in those areas.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR OUTFIT
We usually recommend staying away from patterns and logo shirts. If you can prepare the following for the baby, that’ll be great:

White swaddles and/or white onesies

Light colour swaddles and/or light colour outfits (less patterns are better as we want the photos focusing on the baby and less on the busy outfits)

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR BABY’S OUTFIT
I will come with a few basic blankets/wrappings. Please make sure you have onesies you want him/her to wear and blankets/wrappings/props/headbands you want the baby to be photographed in. One white onesie is also good for a clean and timeless picture.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE SHOOT, 48 HOURS LEADING TO THE SHOOT!
There are a couple things that we learned the hard ways when we first started shooting newborn photos. Not changing the feeding is one. (ie. if he/she’s been breastfeeding, keep it that way and don’t introduce formula until after the session.)
Keep the feeding the same so less bowel movements and discomforts for the baby on the day of the shoot. Less discomforts mean more photos for you to cherish. 🙂

And this is why the earliest the session is (as early as four days old) is the best. It gives you freedom to make the necessary changes anytime after that.

HOW TO PREPARE THE BABY – AN HOUR BEFORE THE SHOOT!

If you can keep the baby awake an hour to two before the shoot, that’ll be great for the shoot time so it can be their sleep and shoot time. We found it work really well when mom tried to feed the baby twenty to thirty minutes before the photographer arrived. (Also, dress the baby in the first outfit you want to be worn first so no need to change him/her which might wake them up). The baby will be asleep when we start the session and we can get the good shots right away. But babies eat when they need to so there is no need to force this. Usually the commotion from the shoot will wake them up half way of the session so it’s best to start with them sleeping first and get the waking moments afterwards.  Thank you for following with us and if you are looking for a Toronto family photographer, head over to our contact form or send us an email hello@helloinspira.com
