Bride Series: Engagement Session in Review

Bride series: Part 1 | Part 2

When Kevin and I had our engagement photos done, we roamed the city of Vancouver for 13 hours. We ate good food, we laughed, we had fun together with our photographer and a couple of our friends who assisted the session. We posed a bit, tried out different dance moves, drove around our campus and neighbourhood. Basically, what we usually did when we dated. Every now and then (usually this time of the year ;)), we sat together and flipped through our engagement book. We talked and laughed about the moments when those image were captured and talked and laughed some more. We had a good time back then and when we looked through them again. I personally think getting our photos done and really focused on our dating time is worth it. The best investment ever, I’d say.

It is such an investment that I think everyone has to have it in their lives and I have included the session, free of charge, into our wedding packages. What I look forward from this session is the true you as a couple in your home, at your favourite store or cafe or restaurant, with your dog(s) or bike or car and I am even open to travelling outside of Toronto to your favourite cities or places you grew up in. I look for you and your soon-to-be-husband/wife together having fun at your favourite place. I want to document your life before the wedding day, before your life as husband and wife and before the kids are here. Those days will be wonderful, I have no doubt, but different. Because believe it or not, life is not going to be the same even a year from now. Let’s document your today and keep it forever!

This summer, I built a short but intuitive and informative couple questionnaire for my couples. Filling it in takes less than 7 minutes (I timed myself and tested out on a few friends) but I got to learn a lot about them as individuals and as a couple. I got to test my questionnaire to Erika and Marcel before their session this fall and it has worked its wonders. We had so much fun and the images turned out better than we expected. Three things that summarize their relationship are: their love for each other, their puppy and their love of outdoor activities. This became our mission statement during the session and we want them to enjoy and remember their “today” as they look through their images. If you haven’t already clicked the link to their names above, here are a few from their session: (EDITED IN January, 2013: and some more info on what to wear :))

We are always asked again and again of what to wear. Our answer is simple: 1. for gentlemen, wear something that makes you feel comfortable (and looks good on you. Yes, 80% of the time you need to go shopping with your fiancee), 2. for ladies, wear an outfit (or two!) that make you feel beautiful. If you feel comfortable, you will not worry about your clothing all the time and your photos will look great. If you feel beautiful in them, you will get beautiful pictures because what you feel shows on your face.

Before going shopping, make sure you sit down and look through your wardrobe for “possibilities”. Your outfit and his/her outfit don’t need to be in the same colour, but make sure they complement each other in colour and style. Here is a link to my styling board for a general idea. But please don’t hesitate to send me an email for any questions and recommendations! I have couples sent me pictures of themselves in their outfits 2 weeks before the session for approval, or shall I say, suggestion, and I am loving it! I am around for a reason and send me that email of questions! No question is too silly or too general to ask! Oh, one last thing, we usually recommend two outfits for our couples. One formal and one casual  so you have a great combination of fun and elegant photos.

 Share the love,

Jenn
