A Travel Journal: New Haven
When I think of Yale, I think of Gilmore Girls. When I think of a visit to the State, I think of road trip. So when the opportunity came late April to sit down with Justin and Mary in New Haven, I thought of: Yale! Road trip! Gilmore Girls! (Okay, scratch the last one actually). Kevin and I were there for a short three-day-visit and managed to try out a few restaurants that ranked quite high on Yelp (per usual).
1. Saray Turkish Restaurant. We went here really late, close to 10.30PM and got their dinner special. I can’t exactly remember what we ordered but something with lamb for Kevin and chicken for me. The eggplant tomato dip sauce for appetizer was to die for. I managed to preserve some to bring back to the hotel and Kevin cringed at the smell of garlic in our car 😉
2. Frank Pepe Pizzeria. Okay, don’t skip this quite yet! This is not your regular pizza joints. Funny fact, we passed by billboards on the way to New Haven and this Pizzeria came up twice so it caught my attention. Went to Yelp and found hundreds of raving comments about the place so we headed there on the second day for lunch. We went traditional with the white clam and sausage pizzas but they were ridiculously delicious! We ordered one medium and one small and the waitress looked at us up and down (“I don’t think these tiny Asians can finish them”). Well, they were so delicious that we licked our plates clean in 30 minutes!
3. DiBella’s Subs. Kevin found this place wayyy before our trip. There is a branch in Rochester, NY (which we heard isn’t as good as the ones in CT). Anyways, this was THE. BEST. SUBS ever! Seriously… We ordered The Godfather and Steak subs. Can you guys open a branch in Toronto soon?!! We are ready to come back every. single. day.
We love antique stores although we restrained ourselves from purchasing any piece until we have our own place… But English Building Markets almost convinced us it was okay to drive back to Toronto with Connecticut’s best antique pieces. They had a beautiful 1920s lace wedding dress that I kept coming back and forth to but decided there would be another opportunity like this again in the future. Still not sure that was the best decision…
We also spent some time wondering around Yale and ended up for hours in their beautiful art gallery. What we noticed in Yale is that every cafe has a book store in it! They seem to be mom-and-pop or at least local (not many big brands here). And we are not talking about regular coffee shops, they also serve omelette and brunch as well. I told Kevin that I wouldn’t be able to buy books there because they smell yummy 😉
Without further ado, here are some snippets of our trip:
