Aveiro Day Trip From Porto
We started the day a little later on the second day in Porto (and Portugal). We had a great (almost) six hours sleep horizontally on the bed (flying red eye made us super thankful for a real bed even if it’s just a sofa bed!). We had a 9:30AM car reservation made but we didn’t get to pick it up until close to noon. On the way to the car rental from the Airbnb, we even stopped by for some coffee and Pasteis de Nata at Pastelaria da Se. The Portuguese tart was very good and we couldn’t wait to taste Pasteis de Belem in Lisbon! It was then time to do the Aveiro day trip from Porto!

We picked up the car, took the toll and went straight to Aveiro in an hour. It was pretty quiet when we arrived. We noticed that tourist crowds don’t pick up until around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It was only our second day in Portugal, we might be wrong.
However, Sam spotted a Chinese restaurant and because we skipped breakfast (the tarts didn’t count :)), we decided to eat first. There was no online review available at this place but what we ordered were great. We had the beef curry, seafood casserole and chicken mushroom.
Once that was taken care of, we started walking around Aveiro’s city center. There was an antique market happening (not sure if it’s a Sunday thing?). There were antique cameras and gramophones. But we were shocked to see some house tilings being there too, they were for sale for around Euro 260 – 600 depending on their sizes!
Before heading back to Porto, we decided to stop and get a gelato at Gelataria Milano Aveiro. At first we wanted to get a huge sundae that was not expensive but there was no table available. We decided to get their gelato for Euro 1.50 (two scoops, two flavours) and walked back.
We stopped by Costa Nova Beach to get some photos by their striped homes but we couldn’t find the “real” ones. Since there are many striped homes there, we decided to stop by two that we really liked 🙂
After the photos, we headed back to Porto and got stuck in traffic a little bit. We left Costa Nova around 5:40 and didn’t get into the city until after 7. Anita and Sam rushed to Chez Lupin to get us a table and we DID GET ONE! Food is pretty pricey but they were very tasty! We also got to try Porto wine finally!
We ended the evening by crossing the bridge to Gaia so we can look at Porto at sunset. One could wish we had more time and more light but we were grateful for an almost uneventful day of sightseeing. We are almost too sad that we didn’t get to see more of Porto but we know we are ready to move on. There are a few tourist spots mentioned online that you might be interested, we decided to skip these because of time: Porto Calem, Teleferico de Gaia, Centro Portugues de Fotografia, and there is also a Leica store in town!
I hope you enjoyed the snippets of our days so far, please let us know if you have any questions or anything!! An Aveiro day trip from Porto is definitely worth it and we’d recommend you to leave Porto earlier to maximize your time away from the city.
